CHON BURI: An Iranian man visiting Pattaya with friends for the first time was beaten and injured by a group of men shortly before dawn in the beach city on Tuesday.

Ali Khadem, 29, owner of a perfume shop in Iran, was bleeding from the head when he ran to a police mobile unit providing assistance to tourists at the entrance of Pattaya Soi 13 in Bang Lamung district around 5am on Tuesday. He was followed by four Iranian friends

The man told police via an interpreter that 4-5 Thai youths armed with glass bottles had assaulted him. He and his friends had immediately fled to seek help from police.

Rescue volunteers gave him first aid before taking him to Pattaya Memorial Hospital.

Pol Capt Thanongsak Inpadung, deputy investigation chief, went to question Mr Khadem on Tuesday morning. Details of the attack were not yet clear.  Police were investigating.

The injured tourist and his friends were reportedly visiting Pattaya for the first time. Some had already left for Phuket.

Police reportedly briefly detained two men, but they denied involvement in the attack. Footage from closed circuit television cameras in the area was being examined.
